today
I picked
the last
tussie-mussie
of zinnias
a small
precious
momento
of summery days
now gone
the spent plants I pulled
and tossed into the bin
to make rich
compost
maybe
for another year of zinnias
all
red-pink-orange-creamy
around
dark and gold-dust-starried eyes
'mal de ojos'
the spanish said
these are hard on the eyes
this brightness
such gaudiness
but in my tiny garden
under the intense sun of our southern land
small zinnia
you were perfect

I had zinnias last summer that appeared almost florescent in the colors and brilliance. I love that they hang on to the very end, sharing their radiance. Lovely bouquet.
ReplyDeleteZinnias, a high summer treat, and a long time in the future for me.
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to them.
Zinnias always remind me of my maternal grandmother, my Yia Yia, and this lovely bouquet certainly does this morning. It seems it is those last bouquets of summer that are the most brilliant and cherished, doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteI look forward to mine
ReplyDeleteso sorry you have picked the last of the season
enjoy them all the more
Gaudy they are. But in the heat of summer when pastels look washed out, a bouquet of zinnias is a charming sight. I put mine in a cobalt blue vase for maximum pop.
ReplyDeleteHow warm and colourful they are. It's always sad to say goodbye to such blooms, but I hope they warm up your compost heap!
